the next five

I took a class yesterday and one of the activities involved making a timeline of the next 5 years of my life. Where do I want to be? How do I get there? I always get a real kick out of these things, because any discussion that involves big ideas about new possibilities lights that fire inside of me. It did not completely surprise me to see that where I want to be in 5 years is running my own business. Actually, I want to get that ball rolling within the year. I hope to be sustaining myself with that business in 5 years. In the past few months I have started a running list of ideas for what I could do.

The first step, for me, to get this thing started has been educating myself. Each of my ideas (which I won’t be sharing until something has begun, thankyouverymuch) involves finding a way to share and profit from something I am PASSIONATE about. I’ve talked about this book before, but Rework has really given me some practical, radical, realistic ideas about how to keep things moving once I’ve put them on the tracks. It’s getting started that I’m preparing myself for now. While I am a firm believer in making it happen, I’m also confident that without the right planning and education things tend to flop more often than not. I am not willing to bank on good luck alone. I’m not talking about getting another degree, but I am doing a lot of reading and talking with people who have walked this road before. And let’s be real, I have to have some serious savings to live on while I wait for the new operation to make money.

For the next several months, I will have my eyes on the goal.  I’ve put myself back on a cash only weekly allowance and upped my savings transfers. There is much to read and learn. Here we go!
